| Donating the Cord Blood |
 |
|
| There are approximately 120,000 live
births in Israel each year. The cord blood units for the ICBB are
donated by healthy, volunteer women, who, after giving life to a their
own child, wish to save the lives of others. |
|
| Professionally trained personnel collect
the cord blood units in the delivery rooms of participating hospitals
throughout the country. The units are screened and genetically tissue-typed
at Hadassah University Hospital, and then stored at the facilities
of Magen David Adom, Israel's national blood service. |
|
| The genetic data on units stored at
the ICBB are available for patients in Israel, and worldwide, through
an international registry. Strict confidentiality is maintained concerning
the identity of the donors and their babies. |
