How is a Public Cord Blood Bank different from a Private Cord Blood Bank?
The ICBB program is a national public, non-for-profit, project and all the participating institutions are public centers. Units are donated by non-remunerated mothers for the benefit of any patient in need of a stem cell unit. Units will not be collected for "private" storage and the mothers will not be charged any fee for the storage of the unit.
Related donations will only be performed in families who have a sick child in which case the cord blood unit of the healthy newborn sibling will be used as a source of stem cell for the treatment of the sick child.
